Re: Another Anti-Taping Story! |
Rob, as I see it(and I may add that I have myopia in one eye, hyperopia in the other and astigmatism in both)there are three possible reasons behind Phil's continued touring. First, and God forbid this is his reason, is that he simply needs the money. Then again, as you said, he may be "very, very greedy". I don't think that is the case and, in fact, would be quite disappointed to discover that to be his reason. And thirdly, and this is the theory I tend to embrace, is the Phil just loves both the music and the fans and truly enjoys life as a touring musician. Can a man ask for anymore from life than to make a very good living by doing what he truly loves???

Haven't been there in real life for a few years, but I tend to go with the flow that Phil just loves playing the music... Not sure if I've heard what ticket prices are going for nowadays though...

Re: Another Anti-Taping Story! |
Bill - we're in agreement on this. I do believe that the primary reason Phil is still touring is that he loves what he is doing and believes (rightly) that he still has a great deal to offer. His selfless promotion of the Grateful Dead legacy through a legion of talented musicians from Jimmy Herring and Warren Haynes to Jackie Greene and Larry Campbell is a matter of record. It was the idea that he was 'cashing in' that I found objectionable. The suggestion I made that he might be greedy was purely rhetorical and not something I hold to for an instant.

Hey I'll agree with you I think he likes to play. There is still much money generated by the band than none of thee guys need to worry about it that much.
I wish the formations where better and more original, but it a tough act to follow....

As someone who's seen Phil play quite a bit over the past year with The Dead and Furthur, I have never seen him happier than he is nowadays. To think he's going on 70. He looks so young and vibrant on stage every night.

Re: Another Anti-Taping Story! |
Just saw Phil and Bobby with Furthur the weekend before last. His playing was very adventurous and symphonic as ever... especially on King Soloman's Marbles, Dark Star, and The Other One. The jams were unique and fresh as ever!
When he came out for the donor rap I could feel that he was very emotionally moved by the experience of performing that music. He is truly grateful for sharing this with all of us.

Re: Another Anti-Taping Story! |
Do recall he's got someone else's liver, and given his avowed treatment of his own, I think it safe to say that it was his fame and fortune that assured he landed one. Also, he rec'd the absolute BEST treatment for his prostate cancer. I mean something that 99.9% would not have access to...I speak of these things from first hand experience with the health care profession, and the understanding of just how difficult it can be for those without the access...no knock on Phil for taking advantage.
I think it safe to say, money isn't everything, but it sure helps.
[again, don't get me wrong, I have no grudge against Phil; he's always been my fav member of the band in many respects...but, it would be silly to ignore the simple reality of what he has been able to do as the member of a million dollar industrial complex. The only reason I bring this up is that the band/band members are a much more complex entity than our simple perception of them [60s bohemians of amaterialistic disposition]]
